ASC Diagnosis Process for Children

  1. Concerns Noticed

    • Parents, teachers, or GP notice developmental delays or behaviours associated with ASC (e.g., social communication difficulties, repetitive behaviours, sensory sensitivities). (Use this tool to help)

  2. Self  Referral

  3. Initial Assessment

    • Screening questionnaires and tools (e.g., Autism Spectrum Quotient, Social Communication Questionnaire) filled out by parents, teachers, and caregivers.

    • We take developmental history.  Download Form

  4. Specialist Assessment

    • A multidisciplinary team (MDT) conducts a comprehensive evaluation, which may include:

      • Parent interview for developmental history.

      • ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule): Observation of the child's behaviour in structured tasks. (About the ADOS -2)

      • Speech and language assessments, cognitive testing, and behavioural observations.

  5. Formal Diagnosis

    • The team uses DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria to determine if the child meets the criteria for ASC.

  6. Post-Diagnosis Support

    • If diagnosed, a support plan is developed, which may include:

      • Educational interventions (e.g., applying for an EHCP).

      • Behavioural support.

      • Speech and language therapy.

      • Occupational therapy for sensory needs.

  7. Follow-up and Review

    • Regular follow-up with specialists and school support teams to monitor progress and adjust interventions as needed.
