ASC Diagnosis Process for Adults

  1. Self-Recognition of Symptoms 

    • The individual recognises long-standing difficulties with social communication, repetitive behaviours, or sensory sensitivities.  (Use this tool to help)

  2. Self Referral

  3. Initial Screening

    • Self-report questionnaires or screening tools (e.g., Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ)) may be used to assess the likelihood of ASC.

    • GP collects developmental history and may request input from family members or close friends.

  4. Specialist Assessment

    • A multidisciplinary team (MDT) conducts a detailed assessment, including:

      • A clinical interview about childhood and current social communication difficulties.

      • Developmental  structured interviews with family members, if possible. Download Form 

      • ADOS-2 or observation-based assessments. (About the ADOS -2) 

      • Cognitive and social interaction evaluations.

  5. Formal Diagnosis

    • Diagnosis is made using DSM-5 or ICD-10 criteria, confirming that traits of autism have been present since early childhood and have caused significant life challenges.

  6. Post-Diagnosis Support - For Example

    • Support plan may include:

      • Psychoeducation and counselling. 

      • Social skills training.

      • Occupational therapy for sensory sensitivities.

      • Employment support and access to workplace accommodations.

  7. Follow-up and Review

    • Ongoing follow-up with healthcare providers to access therapeutic support, manage any co-occurring conditions, and review progress.
